Alumni Story | Ying Ying Li: From Legal Professional to Public Health Practitioner

A New Direction in Life: From Law to Public Health

I began my career as a legal professional with a strong passion for the law. However, after going through a profound personal health experience, I decided to bring my legal expertise into the field of public health. By embracing a new discipline, I sought to redefine the meaning and passion in my life. Among the many graduate schools I was accepted into, I ultimately chose the Master of Public Health (MPH) program at National Yang Ming University. To fully dedicate myself to this new field, I temporarily left my position at a law firm and paused my work in university administration to immerse myself in learning and explore how to integrate my diverse backgrounds into a unique professional path.

Flexible Curriculum: Designing a Personalized Learning Journey

One of the defining features of the MPH program is its flexible course structure, which allows students to tailor their studies based on their interests and career plans. I was able to design a curriculum that aligned with both my background and aspirations, while also engaging with classmates from various professional fields. Through interdisciplinary coursework, I built meaningful friendships and enjoyed a fulfilling and joyful graduate school experience. The professors’ dedication to teaching and thoughtful course design helped me cultivate multifaceted critical thinking skills and a more comprehensive approach to research and social issues. I’m truly glad I chose the MPH program, and I’m proud of my graduation.

Staying True to My Purpose: Practicing Public Health in the Medical Field

After graduation, I returned to Cathay General Hospital—where I had once received treatment—this time as a healthcare administrator. Re-entering the hospital not as a patient but as a professional, I joined the Department of Community Medicine, where I actively promote disease prevention and engage with local communities. I hope that through my interdisciplinary journey, I can help build healthier and better communities. Staying true to the original motivation that brought me to MPH, I will continue to learn, grow, and explore new possibilities.
